Chemistry Gin is not just a labour of love: it’s the fulfilment of a long-held dream. A dream that began in the Highlands of Scotland, a decade ago. That’s where we fell in love with locally-produced gins including Isle of Harris, Rock Rose, Kirkjugagr and The Botanist.
Fast forward to 2019. We emigrated to New Zealand … and discovered we could make our dream a reality!
Marie, our founder (left), is a medical biochemist. Her partner in crime is Laura (right). Together, they’re the duo behind the Karori Drinks Company.
Marie’s not just a medical biochemist — she’s also a fantastic cook, and an instructor in the Wellington Adult Education cooking school.
Marie turned her scientific mind to identifying the ideal flavour combinations for their new gin.
While Laura kept things light-hearted, Marie developed the recipe for Chemistry Gin in late 2020.
We searched for a bottle made from 100% recycled glass, and found one in early 2021. [Read about it in our FAQs here.] Then we found a distiller to make it for us here in the North Island.
From the start, we committed ensuring Chemistry Gin is a force for good. That’s why at least $2 from every bottle of Chemistry Gin will support women in STEM.
We bottled our first batch at the end of August, 2022.
And in November, we won our first Gold medal for Chemistry Gin!
Chemistry is a modern London Dry gin, juniper forward and with botanicals including Sichuan peppercorns, sage and seaweed.
